Good & bad of installing a larger battery than the original?

October 27, 2024

Replacing the original battery with a higher-capacity one is a common need for many people. There are several benefits when you install a battery with a larger capacity than the factory original:

  • Better load handling, allowing you to use more electrical devices.
  • More engine starts after each full charge.
  • Less worry when the car is parked for a long time, because it takes longer to run out of charge.
  • Better support for vehicle modifications and upgrades such as lighting, audio systems, etc.

In practice, a new battery with about 10–20% higher capacity is still suitable for use. However, GS recommends that users replace the battery with one that has a capacity equivalent to the original specified by the manufacturer, so it best matches the vehicle’s operating design and helps minimize risks:

  • When the vehicle sits unused for a long time, the alternator has to work harder each time the engine is started again.
  • When the battery is weak and its ability to hold a charge is poor—so it keeps charging but still doesn’t become fully charged—the risk of alternator damage is higher.

Notes when replacing a car battery yourself

Drivers can replace a battery themselves, but should make sure the battery tray size is compatible and the terminal positions are correct. For premium vehicles with an auxiliary battery, the engine can be turned off during replacement. For most standard vehicles, the battery replacement procedure is as follows:

  • Step 1: Recheck the battery tray size and terminal positions.
  • Step 2: Start the engine (if it is still possible).
  • Step 3:Remove the old battery terminals in this order: negative (-) first, then positive (+). Carefully cover the positive terminal to prevent short circuits, fire, or vehicle damage.
  • Step 4:Lift the old battery out of the tray and install the new battery.
  • Step 5: Connect the new battery terminals in reverse order: positive (+) first, then negative (-).
